I had a fantastic experience trying my first class. Sensei Jim is knowledgeable and easily approachable. I immediately felt welcome, and he did a great job managing everyone’s skill level. Sensei Jim, and all of his students were adept at matching the intensity and technique level to their partner. The martial art I have spent most of my adult life training in doesn’t address grappling or clinch work as much as I’d like, and Sensei Jim and his students created an environment that allowed me to try new techniques, and made me aware of my weak areas or habits without treating it like an opportunity to show off their own skills. The structure of the class was practical and fun, and the skills practiced in the beginning of class were highly encouraged to be practiced in sparring in the second half. It was easy to tell that ego was left at the door. Thank you again for the fantastic experience, and I look forward to my availability opening up after the semester ends to be able to come more consistently!
This place is a truly unique place not only because Kudo is a fairly rare martial art in the US, but also because the culture of training here is something that’s rare. It’s all about experimenting, having fun, and truly developing your own techniques and style that suits you. Jim is a great teacher and the thing I think demonstrates best what kind of instructor he is, is his ability to say I don’t know but let’s figure it out together. Kudo is a very fun martial art for both beginners and advanced practitioners looking to learn something unique.
Wow, what an incredible studio. When you're looking for a good martial arts studio, you want to find:
1. A patient and capable coach/sensei.
2. A community of people who want to work hard together, but also treat each other with kindness and respect.
3. A stress tested martial art with a lot of sparring, but the ability to control how intense said sparring is.
If you're looking for the above 3 points, give New England Kudo a shot. Sensei Jim is an incredible teacher who clearly loves Kudo, knows his stuff, and is willing to share that enthusiasm through thoughtful and insightful coaching.

Sensei Jim is a highly approachable, patient and intelligent teacher who creates a physically and socially safe, ego-free and exciting learning environment; His teaching style helps develop martial arts IQ while also allowing the student to develop their own personal expression and style.
Sensei Jim possesses a palpable passion for the martial arts as well as for learning and teaching, and it is clear that New England Kudo is a dojo of passion as much as it is a dojo of talent and expertise!
Whether you’re a beginner, recreational martial artist, or a competitive fighter, I highly recommend Sensei Jim and New England Kudo.
